One eye open at night

April 18, 2009

“If the elephants have past lives
Yet are destined to always remember
It’s no wonder how they scream
Like you and I
They must have some temper”

A hot balmy night.  Rachael Yamagata playing in a darkened room.  Re-reading.  A soft, contented smile.

If it is at all possible, I think I like Elephants better than Happenstance.

Old school

February 28, 2009

There was a bizarre cover of Lithium in Marley and Me. It had its charm but I didn’t like it. Give me Nirvana any day.  I’m very old school.

“I’m so happy cause today
I’ve found my friends
They’re in my head”

I had fried chicken rice for lunch today and the rest of the afternoon, this song was playing in my head. 🙂

“Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother’s love
And its funny how it’s the simple things in life that mean the most
Not where you live or what you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There`s no dollar sign on a peace of mind this I’ve come to know
So if you agree have a drink with me
Raise you glasses for a toast
To a little bit of chicken fried”

This song makes me think of one of my friends driving, windows down, sunnies on, song blasting and lip-syncing to the music.  Makes me kinda happy.

Joni Mitchell is amazing. This song could be written for me.

Rolls and flows of angel hair,
Ice cream castles in the air,
Feather canyons everywhere,
I’ve looked at clouds that way.

But now they only block the sun.
They rain, they snow on everyone.
So many things I would’ve done
But clouds got in my way.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down and still somehow
It’s clouds’ illusions I recall.
I really don’t know clouds at all.

When the stars go blue

If I were a boy

January 14, 2009

Fantastic cover of a Beyonce song by Kina Grannis.  I love her!  My plan to go for a swim got replaced by you-tube and guitar playing.  Happiness!

(The original music video is also pretty awesome.  Though heartbreaking.)

This is my first musical find of the year.  First heard of him when a friend heard him in the US and said that his songs made him think of me.  Then again over the weekend when I got into another friend’s car.  He handed me his ipod to pick our driving tunes and as I scrolled through the A’s, I found Amos.

I have to say that a person with a good selection of music on his/her ipod is a serious +1 in my book.  Especially when it is high quality stuff, sufficiently diverse and has a nice mixture of mainstream and indie.  A playlist with songs by artistes that are slightly under the radar always get my attention.

Pleased.
